Safety Awareness: What Should You Do Before & After Pest Control Treatment?

September 16, 2026
Planning a pest control treatment at home? Whether you’re dealing with cockroaches, ants, spiders, silverfish, fleas, rats, mice or other rodents, or you’re concerned about termite activity, professional pest control can help identify the problem and determine an appropriate treatment approach.

Hitman Professional Pest Control provides pest control services for Brisbane, Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast homes and businesses.

Different pests and treatment methods can require different preparation and after-care instructions. Our technician will provide instructions specific to your treatment, so always follow their advice and the relevant product label.

What Types of Pest Problems Can Require Professional Treatment?

Pest control safety instructions can apply to a range of treatments around your home, including:

  • Cockroaches – including indoor and outdoor infestations
  • Ants – including ants entering kitchens, living areas and other parts of the home
  • Spiders – including treatment around common indoor and outdoor harbourage areas
  • Silverfish – often found in bathrooms, wardrobes, storage areas and other damp or sheltered spaces
  • Fleas – particularly where pets or other animals are present
  • Rats and mice – including other rodent infestations around residential and properties
  • Termites – which require specialist assessment and treatment due to the potential for structural damage

The preparation and re-entry requirements can vary depending on the pest, treatment method, product used and areas being treated. Your technician will explain any specific precautions you need to take.

Before Pest Control Treatment: How to Prepare Your Home

Before your pest control technician arrives, there are several things you can do to prepare the treatment area.

1. Keep people and pets away from treatment areas

Where reasonably practicable, keep children, adults and pets away from areas that are being treated.

This allows your technician to work safely and helps prevent unnecessary exposure to the treatment product.

2. Remove or cover food and kitchen items

Before treatment, remove or securely cover:

  • Exposed food
  • Cooking utensils
  • Crockery
  • Food preparation items
  • Other items that may come into direct contact with food
  • Pay particular attention to kitchen benches, dining areas and other food preparation surfaces.
3. Remove pet food and water bowls

Take your pets’ food and water bowls out of the treatment area before the technician begins.

Once treatment is complete, follow your technician’s instructions before returning them to the area.

4. Protect fish tanks and aquariums

If you have an aquarium or fish tank in an area being treated, cover it securely and switch off the air pump during treatment, as directed by your technician.

Aquatic environments can be particularly sensitive to pest control products, so it’s important to follow the specific instructions provided for your treatment.

5. Protect birds and other pets

Bird cages should be covered or removed from the treatment area as advised by your technician.

If you have other pets or animals, let your pest control technician know before treatment so they can provide appropriate instructions.

6. Tell your technician about health concerns

Before treatment begins, tell your technician if anyone in the household:

  • Is pregnant
  • Has asthma
  • Has allergies
  • Has chemical sensitivities
  • Has another relevant health concern

This information can help your technician provide appropriate safety instructions for your circumstances.

After Pest Control Treatment: When Can You Go Back Inside?

One of the most common questions people ask after pest control is:

“How long do I need to stay out of the house after pest control?”

The answer can depend on the product used, treatment method and areas treated, so always follow the instructions given by your pest control technician.

As a general guide, you may be advised to stay out of treated areas for around 30 minutes or until treated surfaces are completely dry.

1. Wait before re-entering

Do not re-enter treated areas until your technician advises that it is safe to do so.

Your technician will tell you when you can safely return based on the treatment carried out.

2. Ventilate the property

When you return, open windows and doors and allow the property to ventilate for approximately 15–30 minutes, where appropriate.

Good ventilation can help freshen the indoor environment after treatment.

3. Keep children and pets away from wet surfaces

Children and pets should stay away from treated areas until all treated surfaces are completely dry.

This is particularly important for young children and pets that spend time close to floors and other treated surfaces.

4. Clean food preparation surfaces

Before preparing food, wash food preparation surfaces that may have been treated or exposed during the treatment.

Follow your technician’s instructions regarding which surfaces should and should not be cleaned.

5. Wash pet bowls

Before putting pet food and water bowls back into treated areas, wash them thoroughly.

6. Don’t immediately wash treated surfaces

It can be tempting to clean everything after pest control, but avoid touching or washing treated surfaces unless your technician advises you to do so.

The treatment is designed to remain effective on certain surfaces, and washing those areas too soon may reduce its effectiveness.

If you’re unsure whether a particular surface should be cleaned, ask your technician.

What If Pest Control Treatment Gets on Your Skin?

If a pest control product comes into contact with your skin, wash the affected area thoroughly with soap and water.

If you experience an ongoing or concerning reaction, seek appropriate medical advice and provide information about the product involved where available.

For product-specific safety information, always refer to the relevant product label or safety information provided by your pest control technician.
